Artist’s Statement / Biography
I stood next to my grandfather’s chair as he told a story about the carnival, drawing out the story’s path on a piece of paper with small, detailed scenes at each attraction. I was frozen in place watching his rough, coal miner’s hand deftly illustrated the scene his words were describing. I was hooked. I needed to make images.
My work continues to evolve, with a growing emphasis on drawing – drawing as the final piece. For many years I worked in encaustic with a focus on political and religious themes. Found objects and wood constructions were the begins of pieces finished with encaustic More recently I find myself returning to a greater focus on the figure, overlapping with abstraction. Along with this shift, I am exploring more with my materials, including working with packaging materials in place of traditional store-bought paper.
I currently live and have my studio in Salem, MA. I received my BFA from Tyler School of Art, Temple University.
